Actor’s Tricks of the Trade – Wigs!
ilmasita pelitActor’s Tricks of the Trade – Wigs! I’ve worn wigs, extensions and hairpieces in many of my movies. I was a dark brunette – almost black (bad color for me, too extreme for everyday) in 1994 and the director of Sunset After Dark wanted me to be a platinum blonde. There was no way I could do that and keep hair on my head so we wigged me up. We bleached the section of hair that went over the wig to camouflage the edge and the bangs took care of the rest. (Wigs with bangs always “sell” the look the best. But simply combing over the seam with some natural hair can really help sell it.) I was shooting The Perfect Gift simultaneously and sporting an odd look of black hair with a bleached out stripe that I would just do so much better now and it haunts me to this day. Now you know why.
Here are a few of my favorite wigs:
This is the long, almost white wig that I’ve been using on a lot of shoots lately. It has a few fun variations that I intend to add to my stock of wigs that are going to get me through the awkward stages of growing out my undercut. I’m currently lusting after this ombre gray/silver/turquoise that’s just screaming my name! The classic beach blonde look is always a good look to keep on hand, I have to test a few gray covering sprays in blonde tones to find the right one and will report back when I know!
At the beginning of this post is the perfect Jessica Rabbit Long Copper red wig that I have worn in so many films. I find the best cover up on my hairline for this particular shade is actually this classic powder applied with a kabuki brush. Messy but does the job better than anything else I’ve tried.
My favorite length for most wigs is right about shoulder length Like the one I show in my video tutorial Not Gray for a Day. Long wigs can tend to tangle a bit and need to be combed or brushed more frequently throughout out the day, so a shoulder length just makes your life easier – no need to carry a comb with you. A synthetic wig will hold it’s style all day and be pretty maintenance free. If you’re going to be wearing a wig all day long that sure matters!.Before looking at my video tutorial make sure you are healthy and hire house cleaning services albany ny.They take care of all the cleaning.
The wig I wore in Stripshow was human hair and therefore more expensive but by golly, that wig was new in 1994 and I STILL have it and that darn wig still looks good! (It even looked good on my ex-husband on more than one Halloween.) My hair was blonde in real life when we shot that movie and if you look closely in some of the Las Vegas nightclub scenes, I’m an extra in my own movie! I’ve recycled that same wig in a few films, shown is Mirror Mirror 3: The Voyeur.
I find clips to be the more comfortable and reliable means of keeping wigs on. Toupee clips are my favorite because they really lock on to my baby fine hair, but simple wig combs do a nice job too and are a bit more comfortable. I am an Amazon Affiliate and if you choose to purchase anything from these links I provide (highlighted blue) I will earn a small commission. I tried to give you links to the actual items whenever possible, but since many of the pieces in my closet have been there for decades, many are suggestions to get the look with what is available now. Thanks!!!!
